Where but on a cruise ship are you surrounded by fellow travelers that you cannot pick? Every cruise is an exodus. Every cruise is ripe with potential ... potential romance ... potential horror. Donna never considered the danger.

Although "The Horror of Waiting" is marketed as a noir mystery, this lurid transgressive novel can be read and enjoyed on many levels. This slim book is a genre-blurring story; the author not afraid to combine elements of literary fiction with extreme violence. Although the author utilizes flashbacks and remembrances the novel gathers steam to achieve the page turning pace of a mystery thriller. The plot line is held together by three cruises: a cruise to the Bahamas, a cruise to the eastern Caribbean, and a cruise to the western Caribbean. Because of this cruise motif the novel can also be read as a travelogue; a travelogue that reads as a horror story. While writing the first three chapters the author must have kept a shovel by his side because the pages are full of details that can be resurrected as "buried guns". The thematic use of amusement parks and carnivals, as well as the stylistic use of "three dots" appears to be an homage to Celine's "Journey to the End of the Night". Once the reader reaches chapter 4 the roller coaster ride begins. The reader is plunged into a Southern Gothic horror story that echoes Flannery O'Connor and Harry Crews. But we do not remain in Florida for long before we begin a dark journey that probes the soft underbelly of a vacation cruise.
The themes that emerge center around slavery and the search for self. The novel is infused with biblical undertones, especially the story of Exodus. There is nothing subtle about the author's use of biblical references. He appears content to hit you over the head with a sledge hammer. As the novel progresses the importance of the references to amusement parks, classic horror movies, and the movie, "The Wizard of Oz" becomes evident. Some readers may find the misogynistic violence of the novel unsettling, but like Bret Easton Ellis, the author is not afraid to confront horror. The Z word is used throughout the story but this is not a zombie novel. The zombies referenced are the zombies of Haitian voodoo; zombies used as slave labor after suffering the horror of lost identity.
When the novel ended I was left wanting more. Hopefully we have not seen the last of these characters.

The Horror of Waiting Keith Minshew 9781481883900 Books Reviews
I was engrossed with this story once I understood the authors writing style. The author does a great job with character building, however, there was a down falls to the book. I had a hard time in the begin with how he jumps between people and places. Once I was able understand; that the author was trying to get the reader to understand the character(s)/story line. To tell the truth I had to reread the first chapter just to understand what was going on. The ending of the book what very disappointing for me. It just fell apart, to me there really was no ending. You will be waiting for more when it is over. One character is so sadistic that it made me worried about the authors why of thinking. The sexual content is VERY strong and I would have to say this book is not for the weak heart. This is a first time author, but to give the book a shot you maybe surprised with it once you are into it even if the ending it not all that great.
